From Military to Civilian Careers: Supporting Veterans in Their Next Chapter

Advice
Posted 11 days ago

Transitioning from military to civilian life is a journey I’m deeply passionate about supporting. As a Key Account Manager at Omega, I’ve worked with countless ex-service professionals, helping them navigate the challenges of adapting to new industries, rebranding their skill sets, and finding meaningful civilian careers.

The step from military service to civilian employment isn’t always easy, but the skills veterans bring; leadership, discipline, teamwork, resilience—are invaluable. My mission is to help veterans translate their experiences into roles where they can thrive, especially back into Aerospace, Defence, and emerging technology sectors.

Understanding the Value of Military Experience

Veterans bring a wealth of transferable skills, but many struggle to articulate them in a way that resonates with civilian employers. My role at Omega is to help bridge that gap.

Whether it’s helping a Systems Engineer describe their achievements in a way that impresses a hiring manager or preparing a Cybersecurity professional for their first civilian interview, I work closely with veterans to position them as top candidates for roles in industries that value their background.

How I Help Veterans Bridge the Gap

At Omega, we’re committed to helping ex-service professionals make successful transitions into civilian careers. Here’s how I personally support veterans through this process:

1. Specialist Industry Knowledge

My focus is on critical Aerospace and Defence verticals, including Cyber, Software, Systems, DevSecOps, Test and Integration, Simulation, and Algorithms, across Stevenage, Gloucester, and Bristol. This means I not only understand the industries but also the challenges veterans face when entering these fields.

2. Tailored Guidance

I work one-on-one with veterans to identify their strengths and align them with civilian job requirements. This includes CV writing, interview preparation, and helping them articulate their transferable skills in a way that resonates with employers.

3. Employer Connections

With strong relationships across leading Aerospace and Defence organisations, I connect veterans with employers who not only value their military backgrounds but also understand the importance of creating supportive career environments.

4. Opportunities with Purpose

Many veterans seek roles where they can continue making a difference. The technical projects in Aerospace, Defence, and emerging tech sectors offer the chance to contribute to globally impactful initiatives, providing that shared sense of purpose.

Success Story: From WO1 to IT Project Manager

One veteran I recently worked with was a WO1 transitioning out of the army. While he was excited about starting his civilian career, he felt overwhelmed and unsure about his next steps.

Together, we explored his options and identified a role as an IT Project Manager. His first interview via Teams didn’t go as well as he’d hoped—he struggled with technical jargon and left feeling disheartened.

We regrouped, reviewed the experience, and rebuilt his confidence for his next opportunity. Just a day later, he was invited to a face-to-face interview. A week after that, as we were exploring other options, we received the great news—he got the job!

Today, he’s thriving in his role and still keeps in touch to share updates about his career journey. It’s stories like these that highlight the value veterans bring to the civilian workforce and why I love what I do.
